SAN SEBASTIAN

San Sebastian (Donostia in the Basque language) is known for many reasons from its rich Basque food history to its gorgeous urban beaches, but what is rarely the topic of conversation is the continued evolution, and rejuvenation, of the arts and culture in and around town. The history of San Sebastian began centuries ago when the 11th-century royals visited from Madrid for holiday; since then it has become more than a getaway for the rich, it is a gastro paradise that overshadows the equally-wonderful art scene.
The city, located on the Bay of Biscay, has two beautiful beaches in the foreground: Ondarreta to the west and La Concha to the east. The hills on each side of the bay, Monte Urgull and Monte Igueldo, serve as platforms for historic sites and impressive overlooks. The city is laid out with wide streets on a grid pattern; it has a quaint and laid back feel and it is easy to navigate. The holiday decorations in December are beautiful; the twinkling lights and bustling streets give the city positive energy.

We love exploring new places on foot so no unexpected gems are missed; San Sebastian is a great place to do just that.

AAT-TIP: Keep in mind that San Sebastian operates on Spanish (siesta) time. Businesses hours are often 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., and then again 5 - 8 p.m. This allows you to do things into the evening hours; however, plan accordingly so you don't end up somewhere that is closed mid-day.

DAY ONE:
ART AND CULTURE
The city itself is divided by the Urumea River, which is crossed by three ornate bridges inspired by late-19th-century French architecture. The buildings surrounding the river, and through the city, are amazing with very historic and detailed metal and stonework. As you walk along take note, and I dare you to try and soak it all in. DAY TWO:
SHORELINE and SCULPTURE
Today we are concentrating on art and adventure by exploring the shoreline from one end to the other. We started by strolling along the western beach until we found a cafe to sip coffee and have a light bite. People were out jogging, walking their dogs, a few of the serious were folks were swimming laps in the bay. MORE
